- The electric hatch could use the same powertrain as the Abarth 600e.
- The new GTi e-208 version may develop more power — over 230 hp.
- Peugeot hasn’t had a GTi model in its lineup since the 308 in 2021.
Peugeot has confirmed it will launch a GTi version of the e-208 hatch. Although limited details are known about it at the moment, it could be an interesting option for buyers who would like to purchase an electric car but are also looking for something exciting to drive.
The new e-208 GTi will be the first Peugeot electric vehicle in the lineup aimed at high performance and is planned to be launched “as soon as possible”. Recently, the company’s head, Alain Favey, told journalists that reviving the GTi brand would help the company “reconnect” with its past and history, as well as establish a connection between Peugeot’s road cars and their participation in the world endurance championship.
The GTi version will use the same platform as the standard model but may borrow powertrain components from it. This car is powered by a front electric motor with 237 hp and equipped with a Torsen limited-slip differential. Since the e-208 is slightly smaller than the 600e, the hot hatch from Peugeot could be very fast, possibly capable of accelerating to 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) in less than 6 seconds.
Favey added that, besides the e-208, Peugeot will consider launching a new GTi model line with an internal combustion engine if it interests buyers.
“We will start with the 208 and definitely listen carefully to your feedback, or what our customers say as well,” he said. “We do not rule out the possibility of launching other 208 GTi variations under the GTi brand, but nothing like that is planned today.”
