Teenager detained for robbing 121 cars in one night

In Maryland, police detained a 16-year-old teenager suspected of breaking into 121 cars in a single night. This is a staggering number, and the boy now faces multiple charges.

The investigation is ongoing, but police in the city of Laurel reported that the crime spree began on May 4 and affected both their city and surrounding areas. Law enforcement managed to identify the suspect, and on May 28, they conducted a search of his residence in Beltsville.

Found items and keys

Police stated that numerous credit cards were found on the teenager, as well as keys to a stolen car used during the crimes. Keys to 25 other vehicles and other stolen items were also discovered. Authorities are attempting to locate the owners to return the property.

The teenager was taken into custody and faces charges of auto theft, as well as numerous counts of car break-ins. Police also reported that two of his accomplices have already been identified and are set to be detained.

Unexpected release

However, the situation has caused outrage: the boy spent only five hours in a detention center before being released by order of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Justice. Police protested, but officials stated that the teenager has no criminal record, did not commit violent crimes, and is not considered a flight risk.

PRESS CONFERENCE: UPDATE
For those who may have missed it, today’s press conference was dedicated to the detention of a 16-year-old teenager in connection with over 100 cases of car break-ins.

This story has sparked public outcry, as the teenager, according to the investigation, committed over a hundred crimes in just one night. As noted by the Laurel Police Chief, this is already serious criminal experience for such a young offender. Questions about accountability and the effectiveness of the juvenile justice system remain open.
