After the $90,000 Sedan, Sony Honda Believes America Now Needs Another Expensive Electric Crossover

Joint Start for Sedan and Crossover

The Sony Honda Mobility joint venture presented the nearly production-ready version of the Afeela 01 electric sedan at the CES exhibition in Las Vegas, as well as a new concept crossover named Afeela Prototype 2026. The crossover is expected to appear on American roads in 2028.

Shared Platform and Design

Both cars are built on a shared technical platform and have similar design features. They are distinguished by wide LED strips at the front and rear, a display panel in the front bumper, and smooth two-tone bodies. Although the overall shape is quite traditional, both models show significant progress compared to the previous Sony Vision-S concepts shown at CES in 2020 and 2022.

Entertainment-Focused Interior

The crossover’s interior is virtually identical to the sedan’s. The entire dashboard is occupied by screens, and two additional displays for rear passengers allow playing PlayStation games. The technical foundation is the Qualcomm Snapdragon digital chassis, supplemented by advanced artificial intelligence developed jointly with Microsoft.

Passengers can immerse themselves in the world of PlayStation video games right on the road.

The crossover’s additional height is expected to provide more space for families or those who regularly transport passengers. Both Afeela cars, equipped with lidars and cameras on the roof, will have Level 2+ autonomy at the start of sales, with the technical capability to upgrade it to Level 4 in the future.

Technical Specifications and Competitors

Detailed technical specifications of the crossover have not yet been disclosed, but they are expected to be close to the sedan’s. The Afeela 01 is equipped with two electric motors with a combined output of 483 hp and a 91 kWh battery, providing a range of about 300 miles (483 km) according to EPA estimates.

These figures do not look too impressive by 2028 standards, especially against the backdrop of the new BMW iX3, which already offers a 400-mile range.

Pricing Policy and Production Plans

The price of the crossover, which will appear in 2028, has not yet been announced. However, one can be guided by the cost of the Afeela 01 sedan. Its starting Signature trim will cost $102,900 and will go on sale at the end of 2026. The more affordable base model Origin, priced at $89,900, will begin selling from 2027. Interestingly, despite being produced in the USA, the first deliveries to customers will begin in Japan in the first half of 2027.

The appearance of the Afeela Prototype 2026 crossover expands the joint venture’s product lineup, targeting a popular market segment. The emphasis on built-in entertainment and a high-tech interior is a logical step for a brand founded by Sony and Honda, combining automotive engineering with entertainment technology. The success of these cars will largely depend on how quickly the market accepts them as an alternative to already existing electric models from traditional automakers, who are also actively developing their own infotainment systems and comfort levels.
