New Hybrid Genesis G80 Sedan Spotted by Spy Photographers for the First Time
Photographers have captured a prototype of the future hybrid version of the premium Genesis G80 sedan during testing in low-temperature conditions. This is the first hybrid from the Korean brand, with its announcement planned for this year.
Expected Technical Features and Design
The car, based on the regular G80, features dense camouflage film, which may indicate certain design updates accompanying the introduction of the new powertrain. Despite the camouflage, a new front bumper with modified air intakes can be discerned.
The question of whether these changes will be exclusive to the hybrid modification remains open, considering that the sedan recently underwent a scheduled facelift in 2024. At that time, the model received updated bumpers, new wheels, LED headlights with Micro Lens Array technology, as well as a completely new instrument panel with a 27-inch OLED display.
The Heart of the Newcomer – An Innovative Hybrid System
The most important news is the powertrain. Hyundai and Genesis have already confirmed plans to introduce a hybrid system based on a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine for rear-wheel-drive models in 2026.
The companies stated that their new-generation hybrid system is equipped with a new transmission with two integrated electric motors. One is responsible for starting, energy generation, and driving assistance, while the other is directly for propulsion and regenerative braking.
According to the manufacturer, such a combination improves power, performance, and fuel efficiency, while simultaneously providing smooth gear shifting, reduced noise and vibrations for a more refined driving experience.
Power Benchmarks and Future Announcements
The hybrid system already used in the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride models can serve as a benchmark. In these SUVs, it develops 329 hp and 460 Nm of torque, combining a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a 1.65 kWh lithium-ion battery, a six-speed automatic transmission, and two electric motors.
The G80 Hybrid is expected to be similar, but exact specifications will become known later this year. The appearance of this model is the first step within the strategy announced last fall by Genesis to significantly expand its electrified vehicle family, which is to include hybrids, electric vehicles, and range-extender models.
Genesis’s entry into the premium hybrid sedan market could significantly intensify competition in this segment. The success of models like the Lexus ES Hybrid indicates sustained demand for luxurious yet economical cars. The key for the G80 Hybrid will be preserving all the comfort and quality attributes of the regular G80, combined with the advantages of hybrid traction. The stated new transmission with two electric motors is of particular interest – its performance in practice could become a significant advantage if engineers manage to achieve the perfect balance between dynamics, ride smoothness, and efficiency.
