After Three Cases of Ignition, Volkswagen Decides to Recall a Large Batch of New Jetta Models

Volkswagen Announces Large-Scale Recall Due to Fire Risk

Volkswagen has initiated a recall of over 61,000 Jetta vehicles from the 2025–2026 model years due to a potentially dangerous manufacturing defect. The issue lies in a possible missing connection of the transmission’s grounding wire, which, if absent, can lead to overheating and ignition in the engine compartment.

According to the manufacturer, the cause is rooted in human error—a mistake during assembly work at a plant in Mexico. Despite the significant number of vehicles involved, the actual defect is expected to be present in less than 1% of them.

Scale of the Problem and Geography

The recall will affect 48,165 vehicles in the US market, manufactured from March 3, 2025, to February 17, 2026, and an additional 13,318 vehicles in the Canadian market. Information about the problem came after reports from service centers in late 2025, indicating a possible incorrect installation of the wire.

An investigation revealed that if this wire is missing, electrical current can be redirected through other components, increasing the risk of their damage or a fire.

Known Cases and Manufacturer’s Actions

At the time of the recall announcement, Volkswagen confirmed six cases related to this malfunction: three cases of melted wiring and three cases of ignition in the engine compartment. Fortunately, all incidents were limited to vehicle damage, with no reports of injuries or accidents.

The company is not issuing general recommendations for owners to park their cars outdoors. Instead, it urges them to contact an official dealer as soon as possible. At the service center, technicians will check for the presence and condition of the grounding wire free of charge and connect or replace it if damaged.

This situation once again highlights the importance of even the smallest details in modern automobile manufacturing, where a single error on the assembly line can have significant consequences. At the same time, the manufacturer’s rapid response and clear action plan to resolve the problem are standard, yet crucial, practices for ensuring customer safety and protecting the brand’s reputation. Such incidents often become a reason for reviewing and strengthening quality control on production lines, which may prevent similar situations in the future.
