Plans of Chinese automaker for plant in Mexico disrupted by US policy

Chinese automaker BYD suspends plans for Mexico

The Chinese company BYD, which is actively expanding in global markets, has temporarily postponed plans to build a plant in Mexico. Initially, the company considered three possible locations for the new production facility but decided to wait due to political factors, particularly the results of the US presidential elections.

As stated by BYD Vice President Stella Li during the opening of a new plant in Brazil, the geopolitical situation significantly impacts the automotive industry.

“Now everyone is rethinking their strategies in other countries. We want to wait for greater clarity before making decisions”

– she said.

New plant in Brazil and problems with working conditions

Despite the pause in Mexican plans, BYD continues to develop in South America. Recently, the company launched its first plant outside of Asia – in the Brazilian city of Camaçari. The enterprise’s capacity allows for the production of up to 150 thousand cars per year, with plans to double this figure in the future.

However, the new plant has already faced a scandal: Brazilian authorities reported violations of working conditions for foreign workers. In response, BYD management promised to improve the situation and pay more attention to compliance with workers’ rights.

Although the Mexican project is currently frozen, BYD continues to seek opportunities for global expansion. The company demonstrates flexibility in its strategy, adapting to changes in international trade and political conditions. Its experience in Brazil shows that rapid growth is sometimes accompanied by challenges that require careful resolution.
