Off-Duty Officer Was Rear-Ended — But Now Charges Were Filed Against Him

Circumstances of the incident

In New Mexico, a former Albuquerque police officer has been officially charged with unlawful imprisonment and petty misdemeanor assault. The case involves an incident in which he, while off duty, allegedly pushed a woman against the side of her car after a minor traffic accident.

The incident occurred on March 28 near the intersection of Paseo del Norte and Universe. According to local media, a 33-year-old woman rear-ended a vehicle in which officer Sean Gunn was a passenger. Surveillance cameras captured the moments right after the impact: Gunn approaches the woman’s car, forcefully opens the door, and moves toward her.

What the video shows

In footage recorded by eyewitnesses, Gunn can be seen grabbing the woman by the wrist, pulling her out of the car, and pressing her against the rear fender while bending her arm behind her back. According to reports, he did not identify himself as a law enforcement officer or show any identification.

Police arrived at the scene almost immediately. Officers spoke with the woman, Gunn, and witnesses. Gunn himself explained that he believed the driver was intoxicated. However, a sobriety test conducted at the scene showed that was not the case, as reported by KRQE.

Resignation instead of disciplinary investigation

After the incident, the Albuquerque Police Department’s internal affairs unit began an investigation into Gunn. However, he chose to retire before the procedure was completed. As a result, the disciplinary proceeding against him was effectively closed.

One witness told police: “All I saw was him grabbing her and pressing her against the side of the car, starting to jerk her around. It was very rough.” Another eyewitness added: “They heard the crash, and he immediately stopped, rushed to her, started yelling, and forcefully opened her car door.”

Legal consequences and public resonance

Retirement does not automatically mean freedom from accountability. Sean Gunn will now have to answer to the court on the charges against him, and video evidence and witness testimony could play a decisive role. This story also raises an important question about the behavior of police officers outside their duties. It shows how an ordinary road conflict can escalate into violence, especially when one of the parties is accustomed to using physical force. Court hearings are expected to draw public attention, and the outcome of the case could become a kind of precedent for similar situations.
