California police are actively combating speed violators
California roads, with their mountain passes and scenic coastal highways, have always attracted car enthusiasts. However, recently, some drivers have started to abuse this by exceeding the speed limit. The state police (CHP) conducted a large-scale operation during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, and the results show that the problem remains relevant.
Over three days of patrolling, 410 fines were issued, of which 247 were for speeding. Among the violators were even groups of cars, such as five Corvettes, which were racing down the highway at speeds over 70 mph in a 55 mph zone. The police published photos of the violators on social media, but this did not stop others—a few days later, two Porsche 911s were also fined for speeding, and in a roadwork zone at that.
Do warnings work?
In addition to fines, the police issued 119 verbal warnings and detained 25 individuals. There was also one fatal accident. Although social media is actively used to publicly condemn reckless drivers, this does not always stop others. As CHP notes, even after the end of the special operation, patrols continue to record numerous cases of dangerous driving.
Fines for such violations in California can be very substantial, especially in speed-restricted zones such as roadwork areas. The police remind us: beautiful landscapes are no excuse for risky behavior on the road. Even if the highway resembles a commercial, that doesn’t mean you can ignore the rules here.
Recent events show that, despite all measures, some drivers continue to neglect safety. The police emphasize that patrols will continue, and fines will be severe—after all, road safety depends on all traffic participants.
