It Took Over 12,000 Complaints for Kia to Acknowledge the Problem and Announce a Recall

Kia Announces Recall of Telluride and K5 Due to Door Trim Issues

Kia is forced to recall over 200,000 Telluride SUVs in the US due to potential delamination of the door trim. The issue concerns models from the 2023–2025 model years. The company had previously announced a similar recall for 100,000 K5 sedans.

As reported by NHTSA, an investigation ongoing since 2023 found that the door trim can delaminate and fall off while the vehicle is in motion. This creates a potential hazard for other road users.

Similar Problem Across Different Models

In both cases, the cause lies in the insufficient application of the adhesive layer between the trim elements

Kia plans to replace the problematic parts with new ones that use both adhesive bonding and mechanical fasteners. Such parts are installed on vehicles manufactured since September 2024.

Interestingly, the company was aware of the problem with the Telluride half a year earlier than in the case of the K5. Initially, Kia believed the situation did not require a mandatory recall, as tests showed the parts simply fell onto the road. However, after intervention by regulators, the company changed its position.

According to the latest data, over 16,000 cases of trim detachment have been registered: 12,112 for the Telluride and 4,082 for the K5. This situation underscores the importance of manufacturers’ prompt response to potential safety problems, even if they seem minor at first glance. Regulatory bodies are increasingly paying attention to such incidents, forcing automakers to be more attentive to the quality of components.
