Porsche may revive iconic design unused for years

Porsche may bring back the iconic Slantnose design

Porsche has registered the trademarks “Flachbau” and “Flachbau RS” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. This could indicate the company’s plans to revive the legendary Slantnose design for a new version of the 911. The original models with this design were produced in a limited series—only 948 cars, of which just 160 made it to the U.S.

The Slantnose was inspired by the racing Porsche 935/78 and featured a unique front end with pop-up headlights instead of the classic round ones. If the company decides to create a modern interpretation of this design, it could spark real excitement among brand enthusiasts.

Limited editions and high demand

Porsche traditionally releases special editions of the 911 in small batches. For example, the Dakar model is limited to 2,500 units, while the S/T is restricted to just 1,963. If Flachbau returns, it will likely also become a rare collector’s car, further increasing its value.

If the company develops a modern version of pop-up headlights, it will trigger a frenzy online and among collectors

The two separate trademark applications could mean Porsche is preparing two versions at once—a standard Flachbau and a more powerful Flachbau RS. The latter may incorporate technologies from the GT3 RS racing models and the upcoming GT2 RS.

Although the original Slantnose models were not very popular in their time, today they are considered true collector’s rarities. The return of this design, combined with Porsche’s modern technology, could become one of the most anticipated releases of the year for brand fans. The company knows how to strike the perfect balance between innovation and classic design, as proven by models like the Dakar and S/T.
