The era of gasoline-powered Porsche 718 sports cars is coming to an end. The company has officially confirmed the discontinuation of the Boxster and Cayman models in October 2025. This decision is driven by tightening environmental standards and cybersecurity requirements, particularly in the EU market, where these cars were already withdrawn from sale in 2024.
However, Porsche does not intend to abandon this segment—fully electric versions are being prepared to replace the iconic 718s. Their debut is expected in the coming years, and it appears they will become a new milestone in the history of the brand’s compact sports cars.
It is worth noting that the current generation (series 982) was introduced back in 2016. The main production took place at the Zuffenhausen plant, and since 2022, some of the cars have also been manufactured in Osnabrück.
Interestingly, 2024 became the most successful year in the model’s entire lifecycle—demand increased by 15%, reaching 23,670 units. However, in the first quarter of 2025, deliveries dropped by 22%, which is logical given the halt in sales in Europe.
Certain high-performance versions—such as the Boxster RS Spyder or Cayman GT4 RS—will continue to exist thanks to special exemptions in regulatory policies.
