Powerful 646-Horsepower Buick Minivan Appears Abroad, But Won’t Reach the US

Luxury Electric Buick Encasa EV Minivan: A Tech Innovation Unavailable for the US

The American car market is missing out on one of Buick’s most interesting new offerings. While in the US the brand offers only a few conventional crossovers, a fully electric luxury minivan, the Encasa EV, has been introduced for China. This vehicle is equipped with ultra-fast charging, comfortable reclining seats, and a large number of screens.

The new Encasa EV is the flagship MPV for the Chinese market and is likely the most technologically advanced car under this brand today. The model already existed as a plug-in hybrid, and the electric version expands the choice for buyers.

Powerful Technical Specs and Fast Charging

The car is built on a dedicated GM electric architecture. It is equipped with a 96 kWh battery and a 900-volt electrical system. For comparison, the Hummer EV has two 400-volt batteries that can switch to 800 volts during charging.

Buick claims that such a system provides a range of up to 601 km (373 miles) in the CLTC cycle and supports a peak charging speed of up to 640 kW. This allows the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 11.5 minutes under ideal conditions.

This charging speed surpasses almost all cars sold in North America, especially for a minivan. Performance is also impressive: the all-wheel-drive system with two motors develops 646 hp and 550 Nm of torque, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 5.1 seconds.

Interior as a Mobile Living Room

The interior of the Encasa EV is fully focused on the luxury that Chinese buyers love so much. The three-row 2+2+3 layout includes reclining second-row seats, numerous displays, and a massive augmented reality head-up display with a diagonal of up to 50 inches.

Among the features rarely available for Buick in the US: air suspension with height adjustment, a built-in refrigerator, entertainment screens for the rear seats, and an advanced driver assistance system based on Momenta software.

Price and Market Prospects

The Encasa EV starts at 489,900 yuan (approximately $68,000), placing it in the middle of the fast-growing segment of premium electric MPVs in China.

Buick once built its reputation on large, comfortable family cars, but today the brand does not sell a single minivan in the US, let alone a 900-volt electric one. In China, however, this formula clearly still works.

The appearance of the Encasa EV on the Chinese market vividly demonstrates how automotive brands adapt their products to the specific needs of different regions. Chinese buyers increasingly value technology, space, and luxury in the form of minivans, stimulating manufacturers to create exactly such models. At the same time, the American market seems to have definitively focused on crossovers and pickups, leaving the niche of comfortable family minivans practically empty. This creates an interesting contrast and shows how different automotive cultures and priorities can be even for one global brand. The success of the Encasa EV in China may later influence General Motors’ decisions regarding its global portfolio, especially if demand for electric MPVs begins to grow in other parts of the world.
