Return of the hatchback from Tata for $4,800 with European design

Tata prepares a major update for budget hatchbacks Tiago and Tiago.EV

Tata is preparing a significant update for its most affordable city model in India. The manufacturer has released the first teaser video of the new Tiago and Tiago.EV, with the full presentation scheduled for May 28.

The original Tiago debuted in 2016, received a mid-lifecycle update in 2020, and minor changes in 2025. Tata calls the 2026 car a new generation, but in reality, this is the third and most thorough facelift of the model, which includes sharper exterior changes and an updated interior.

Design and exterior

The body has received stylistic features that greatly resemble European hatchbacks, such as the Opel Corsa. The new front end features slimmer headlights and a grille that combine with connected bumper air intakes. The fully electric version is distinguished by body-colored panels and a corresponding bumper pattern.

The profile retains the familiar proportions, but designers have found creative ways to refresh it. Plastic cladding now covers the wheel arches, additional black decor breaks up the C-pillar, and new 15-inch diamond-cut wheels complete the visual update.

The rear end has also undergone significant changes: slimmer full-width LED taillights and a new bumper housing the repositioned reverse light have appeared. The only difference between the petrol and electric versions is the Tiago and Tiago.EV badges on the tailgate, as the exhaust pipe is hidden under the rear bumper.

Expected interior features

Tata has not yet shown the interior, which is expected to receive better equipment. Cameras mounted on the mirrors hint at the availability of a surround-view camera, borrowed from the recently updated compact SUV Tata Punch.

The 2025 update brought a redesigned dashboard with a 10.25-inch infotainment display, which may be joined by a new digital instrument cluster and redesigned seats with integrated headrests. Additionally, local media expect the Tiago to receive six airbags as standard equipment, instead of the current two.

Technical specifications and price

Technical specifications remain a mystery for now, but recent reports suggest that the Tiago will continue to use the previous powertrains. The current naturally aspirated 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine produces 85 hp (63 kW / 86 PS), while the compressed natural gas (CNG) version has 75 hp (56 kW / 76 PS). The fully electric Tiago.EV is available in medium and long-range versions with varying power.

Prices for the updated models will be announced at the market launch on May 28. Judging by the noticeable updates, they may be slightly more expensive compared to their predecessors. For reference, the previous Tiago started at 4.60 lakh rupees (about $4,800 at the current exchange rate) excluding road costs, while the zero-emission Tiago.ev cost from 7.99 lakh rupees ($8,300).

The competitors of the Tata Tiago in India are the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.

The Tiago update demonstrates Tata’s strategy of gradual but systematic improvement of its models, allowing it to remain competitive in the budget car segment. Although the company calls this a “new generation,” the technical base remains unchanged, indicating a desire to optimize development costs. At the same time, the significant design update and addition of modern safety and comfort features, such as a surround-view camera and six airbags, should attract buyers looking for an affordable but modern car. Maintaining an accessible price, even with a slight increase, will remain a key factor for success in the Indian market, where cost plays a decisive role.
