The return of the Xterra could trigger a new wave of rugged off-road vehicles from Nissan

Nissan may change strategy for its Mississippi plant

Nissan’s plant in Canton, Mississippi, could become a hub for the production of body-on-frame vehicles. Rumors suggest the company is considering moving part of the production of the Armada and QX80 models to the US, as well as launching two new off-road vehicles. These new SUVs could be based on the next-generation Nissan Frontier platform and receive hybrid powertrains.

Initially, Nissan planned to convert the plant for electric vehicle production, but is now considering an alternative option. According to a source, the company is developing a strategy for the release of body-on-frame models at this facility. This would avoid customs duties and increase its presence in a key market.

We are actively exploring opportunities to produce more body-on-frame vehicles. Improvements within existing production capabilities are one option.

Prospects and challenges

New models, including the possible return of the Xterra, would allow the plant to produce over 400,000 vehicles per year. Currently, the facility is operating at less than half capacity, producing only the Altima and Frontier. However, plans for cooperation with Honda remain uncertain – sources call them “unrealistic for now”.

Growing uncertainty about demand for electric vehicles is also affecting Nissan’s strategy. Some observers believe that the reduction of government incentives for EVs could lead to a drop in sales. However, despite this, the company still plans to produce two new electric crossovers at the same plant by the end of the decade.

These changes reflect the complex balance between traditional and innovative approaches in the automotive industry. Manufacturers are forced to adapt to market fluctuations while maintaining long-term development strategies. Nissan’s decision could become a telling example of flexibility in conditions of economic instability.
