Global Electric Vehicle Sales in the First Half of 2025
The global market for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids continues to grow, but the situation varies significantly across regions. Sales increased in all key markets, and this trend may continue until the end of the year. However, difficulties are possible in the US due to the cancellation of tax incentives for electric cars in September.
China remains the undisputed leader – 5.5 million electric vehicles and hybrids were sold here. In Europe, growth was 26% (2 million vehicles), with sales in Germany, after a decline in 2024, increasing again by 40%. A significant increase is also observed in Spain (+72%), Italy (+58%) and the United Kingdom (+32%).
Sales by Region (January-June 2025)
Region | Sales | Change vs. 2024 |
---|---|---|
China | 5.5 million | +28% |
Europe | 2.0 million | +26% |
North America | 0.9 million | +3% |
Other countries | 0.7 million | +40% |
Total | 9.1 million | +28% |
The situation in North America is less optimistic – overall growth is only 3%. The main reason is a 23% drop in sales in Canada following the cancellation of government subsidies. For comparison, growth in the US was 4%, and in Mexico – 20%.
The cancellation of tax incentives in the US could lead to a temporary increase in sales in the summer, followed by a sharp decline in the fall. Meanwhile, the market in Europe and China continues to develop actively, especially against the backdrop of new stimulus measures in some countries.
