Professional Drivers Completely Redesigned the GR Yaris Steering Wheel From Scratch

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its rally hatchback — the GR Yaris Type 26. The model, created based on Gazoo Racing expertise, received a redesigned steering wheel and a new option for extremely grippy tires.

Control Interface Updates

The most noticeable change for the 2026 model year is the appearance of a new steering wheel, which was previously shown in the GR Yaris Morizo RR prototype. Its design resembles Ferrari steering wheels, and the traditional Toyota emblem has been replaced with the GR logo. This visual update aligns with the rebranding of the Gazoo Racing sub-brand, but the changes are much deeper.

Professional drivers complained that the steering wheel of the previous GR Yaris required caution to avoid touching the switches when performing 180-degree turns without hand repositioning. To avoid this, designers reduced the diameter and optimized the grip shape.

Furthermore, the new controls are now backlit and positioned separately for more convenient use. Engineers also improved the tuning of the electric power steering function so it works better with high-grip tires for track or rally use. Additionally, the range for detecting steering torque has been expanded through optimization of the torsion bar stiffness and updated software.

New Tires for High Speeds

The RZ High Performance versions, with or without the aero package, receive a new set of Bridgestone Potenza Race tires on 18-inch BBS alloy wheels. These tires were developed after extensive testing to ensure high grip over extended periods.

The updated tread pattern, internal structure, and rubber compound significantly improve handling when driving at the car’s limits.

These improvements are achieved in combination with optimized damping characteristics of the front and rear shock absorbers. Another minor change for 2026 is that heated seat and steering wheel functions are now available together with a mechanical handbrake in the Navigation or Comfort packages.

Technical Specifications Remain Proven

Technically, the turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine remains the same. It produces 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque. Buyers can still choose between a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Power is sent to all four wheels via the GR-Four rally system with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch and Torsen differentials at the front and rear.

Availability and Model Evolution

The Toyota GR Yaris Type 26 is already available for order in Japan. Prices start from 3,617,200 yen (approximately $22,700) for the base RC version and go up to 5,882,200 yen (about $36,900) for the top RZ High Performance trim with the aero package. These updates are expected to become available in other markets soon.

The GR Yaris debuted in 2020, but Toyota has continuously improved it, taking feedback from its rally team. Initially, the limited GRMN Yaris series appeared in 2022 with weight reduction measures and chassis improvements. In 2024, the hatchback received a facelift, bringing an updated design, a completely redesigned interior, a stiffer chassis, a more powerful engine, and an automatic transmission option. In 2025, Toyota introduced an optional aerodynamic package and two special versions named after WRC drivers Ogier and Rovanperä, with individual driving modes. The 2026 updates, focused on the new steering wheel, make the best Yaris even more attractive to driving enthusiasts. For those who want the absolute maximum, Toyota will soon release a limited series GR Yaris Morizo RR with carbon elements and a special Morizo all-wheel-drive mode.

The GR Yaris Type 26 updates demonstrate Toyota’s constant attention to details important to the driving enthusiast. Instead of global changes to the design or powertrain, engineers focused on refining those elements that directly affect the driving feel and road contact. This approach is characteristic of mature but still evolving sports models, where each generation does not just get updated but evolves based on feedback from real competitions and operation. Such a philosophy allows preserving the spirit of the original while gradually increasing its technical perfection. Similar updates often become the last for a model before its replacement, concentrating all the accumulated experience.
