Car thieves have not disappeared, and the latest technologies sometimes only make their job easier. Powerful muscle cars are a prime example. Their vulnerability to wireless hacking makes them an attractive target. However, an innovative protection has emerged, borrowed from the IT world – two-factor identification, which now protects not only bank accounts but also your car.
Start Defender is a joint development by Wesley Motorsports and Mopar Direct Connection. The device integrates with the car’s CAN network, adding an extra layer of protection. After activation, the engine will only start after entering the correct sequence of buttons on the steering wheel, which the owner can change.
Users configure the codes via the device’s secure Wi-Fi network. Four unique combinations are available for different drivers. The system can be quickly deactivated, for example, when handing the car over to a service or a valet.
Stellantis reports that Start Defender can be installed independently or at a workshop without damaging standard components. Only the owner can reset the settings, and if the code is lost, the device will have to be sent to the manufacturer.
“This system is an additional protection tool for HEMI car owners, giving them more confidence,” said Dodge CEO Matt McAlear. The kit includes an external relay, and the hood sensor can activate any 12-volt device, potentially enhancing protection.
As Kevin Wesley notes, malicious actors could dismantle the device, but the alarm activated via the hood will become an additional barrier. The system is also useful in everyday situations – refueling, shopping – preventing theft even if a cloned key is present.
Currently, Start Defender costs $695, but Dodge offers a $100 discount. A small price for extra protection for your Charger or Challenger.
