Electric Ram 1500 REV Cancelled Before Launch
In an unexpected turn of events, Ram has halted the development of the fully electric 1500 REV pickup. This model debuted at the New York Auto Show in 2023 and was initially planned for release in late 2024.
Although the release was delayed, the brand insisted that the model would still appear. Just a few months ago, Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis stated that electrification was continuing, despite the return of Hemi engines. He also emphasized that the company had the “luxury of time” and the advantage of late entry into the electric vehicle market, which allowed them to postpone the launch due to low demand for the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Tesla Cybertruck.
We have the luxury of time and the advantage of being the last in the electric vehicle market.
Strategy Shift Due to Falling Demand
In an official statement, Ram emphasized that the slowdown in demand for full-size electric pickups in North America forced them to review their product strategy and halt the development of the fully electric version.
This decision seems particularly unexpected because the work on the model appeared to be almost complete. According to preliminary data, the Ram 1500 REV was to receive batteries with a capacity of 168 and 229 kWh, providing a range of up to 500 miles. An all-wheel drive system with two motors producing 654 hp was also planned, allowing acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
Ramcharger Becomes the New REV
Despite the cancellation of the electric version, the REV name is not disappearing—it will now transfer to the Ramcharger model, which is a range-extender hybrid. This model is expected to appear in 2026.
The technical specifications have already undergone changes: the engine power has been reduced to 647 hp, and the torque to 610 lb-ft. The range remains at 690 miles, and the 0-60 mph acceleration time is 4.5 seconds. However, given numerous adjustments, the final parameters may still change.
The renaming and concept change reflect current market trends, where hybrid technologies are gaining increasing popularity among buyers of large pickups. Ram seems to be betting on more versatile solutions that combine the environmental benefits of electrification with the practicality of traditional engines.
