In Kyiv, a rare 1962 GAZ-23 is up for sale. This Volga was created for the KGB, and the people called it “the chaser,” reports Ukrainian Radio.
At first glance, the car is indistinguishable from a GAZ-21, but under the hood hides a 5.5-liter V8 from the Chaika. The GAZ-13 also donated a 3-speed automatic transmission.
The GAZ-23 Volga is the fastest Soviet car of its time.
It accelerates to 100 km/h in 16 seconds and can reach 170 km/h. For reference, a regular Volga takes 34 seconds and has a top speed of 130 km/h, respectively. This is despite the GAZ-21 being 300 kg lighter.
The “chaser” also has reinforced suspension and brakes. Since the front part of the car turned out to be too heavy, a lead plate ballast was often placed in the trunk to improve weight distribution.
You can buy the GAZ-23 for $140,000. This is quite a sum, but only 603 of these cars were produced, and only a few have survived to this day. Additionally, this KGB Volga is in excellent condition.
