Repair of electric vehicles is becoming cheaper, but remains more expensive than cars with internal combustion engines

Electric vehicles are becoming cheaper to repair

Electric vehicles are gradually becoming cheaper to repair after accidents. This is due to the fact that more and more auto repair shops are gaining experience working with such cars. However, the cost of repairing electric cars is still 15-20% higher than that of conventional cars with internal combustion engines.

According to the German Insurance Association (GDV), in 2023, insurance payouts for electric vehicles were 20-25% higher compared to similar gasoline models. However, this difference has now narrowed to 15-20%.

“The more electric vehicles appear on the roads, the less their insurance claims differ from those of conventional cars”

According to GDV representatives, the growing popularity of electric vehicles has led to workshops, towing services, and other specialists gaining more experience in working with them. At the beginning of 2024, about 1.65 million electric vehicles were registered in Germany – five times more than in 2021.

Although electric vehicles still remain more expensive to repair, the trend of decreasing prices is obvious. This is especially important for a market where the share of electric cars is constantly growing – they now account for 3.3% of the total number of cars in Germany. Technologies are improving, and service centers are adapting to new requirements, which in the future could make the operation of electric vehicles even more affordable.
