Renault can significantly improve its retro-style R4 electric car

Renault presents an off-road concept based on the R4

Having recently debuted on European roads, Renault is already showcasing a potential upgrade for its electric R4. The Savane concept received an additional motor on the rear axle, marking the first time the model has all-wheel drive.

The name Savane is borrowed from a historical version of the R4. The concept features a 15 mm higher ground clearance, special 18-inch wheels with Goodyear UltraGrip tires that widen the track by 20 mm. The exterior is adorned with Jade Green paint and a fabric roof, while the interior follows a “field” theme with brown-colored seats.

“The concept demonstrates the potential of the AmpR Small platform for creating a B-segment electric car with all-wheel drive”

The production version of the R4 E-Tech uses the same AmpR Small platform as the Renault 5 E-Tech, but so far all models are limited to front-wheel drive. Adding a second motor could theoretically increase power to 300 hp, opening possibilities for both an off-road version and a hot crossover.

Although Renault has not yet confirmed series production of the Savane, the brand is known for its concepts often preceding actual models. It remains an open question whether the smaller Renault 5 platform could also receive similar technical solutions.

The concept’s presentation comes amid Renault’s active development of electric models. Recently, the company has been focusing on reinterpreting its historical models with modern technology, combining nostalgic design with cutting-edge technical solutions.
