Waymo Robotaxis Can Now Drive Where They Were Previously Prohibited

Expansion of Waymo’s Capabilities on Highways

Waymo passengers can now use highways in three cities, which promises to speed up trips and make them more useful. Additionally, the service area has been expanded in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Improvements in Transportation Solutions

Robotaxis promise to transform transportation, but their development has been hindered by a number of restrictions. Waymo is eliminating one of the most important ones, as their vehicles can now drive on high-speed roads.

This is a significant step, as most passengers were previously limited to city streets. This was acceptable for short trips, but less convenient for those needing to cover longer distances.

As the company explained, “Highway trips make Waymo even more convenient and efficient, whether you’re heading to Sky Harbor International Airport, traveling from downtown Los Angeles to Culver City, or commuting to work in our newly expanded service area in the Bay Area.”

Gradual Rollout of the Service

Waymo did not provide many details about this step, but confirmed that it will begin inviting passengers to use highways in Phoenix, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The company appears to be taking a gradual approach, noting that highway access will be provided to a “growing number of passengers.”

The service will be gradually rolled out to more people, and the company suggested that over time it may expand to other cities, including Austin, Atlanta, and others.

Expansion of Service Geography

Speaking about the growth of service areas, Waymo announced a significant expansion in the San Francisco Bay Area. The service area will now include “the entire peninsula,” extending “from San Francisco all the way to San Jose, including curbside services at San Jose International Airport.”

This is an important development that builds on previous plans to deploy robotaxis in Detroit, Las Vegas, and San Diego. Additionally, Waymo plans to enter London in 2026, indicating the company’s global ambitions.

These changes could significantly increase the competitiveness of autonomous vehicles in the market, as increased speed and trip range make them more attractive for daily use. The expansion of geography also opens up new opportunities for integrating robotaxis into the citywide transportation system, particularly in connection with airports and suburbs.
