Unique Corvette Restomod with an Exoskeleton
Today, many impressive restomods can be seen on the roads. Some modernize classic cars with contemporary components, others install bodies of old models onto new chassis. However, this project demonstrates a completely different approach with a similar result.
Design Features
The work was performed by the company Stripped Down Street Rods, which created a car based on the 2009 Corvette Z06 that remotely resembles the 1963 model. Although it is far from an exact replica of the original, but rather a creative interpretation.
This is not the first car with a tubular exoskeleton we have written about. Several months ago, someone put up for sale a Dodge Challenger created according to a similar concept.
Technical Specifications and Modifications
Despite the unusual exterior, the tubular structure is not visible from the interior, allowing the driver to fully enjoy the advantages of the Z06 – the powerful engine and manual transmission.
Under the hood lies a 7.0-liter LS7 V8 engine producing 500 horsepower. The builders added a short-throw shifter but largely preserved the original Z06 running gear.
Among the notable changes are lighting elements inspired by the C2, a MOMO steering wheel, vinyl bucket seats, four-point safety belts, and 19-inch Corvette Centennial Cup wheels.
Additional Features
Marine-grade carpeting and headliner provide protection from moisture if the car gets caught in the rain. 275mm wide Nitto tires and a functional traction control button help maintain road grip.
This is undoubtedly a strange but attention-grabbing car. It will be presented at the Mecum auction in Las Vegas on November 15th. Considering all the unusual aspects of this car, it is difficult to predict at what price it will be sold. However, there is no doubt that the new owner will get immense pleasure from driving it.
Similar projects demonstrate how modern car builders are experimenting with the concept of open-frame cars, combining classic aesthetics with modern technology. Although this particular Corvette might look somewhat overloaded with details compared to other similar projects, it is unique in its creative approach to interpreting the C2 design. Such cars often become subjects of heated discussions among car enthusiasts, but it is their uniqueness that makes them valuable to collectors.
