Development of Toyota’s Mid-Engined Sports Car Faces Unexpected Difficulties

Problems with the New Toyota GR Yaris M Concept

Toyota has acknowledged that its new GR Yaris M concept car, unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2025, has technical issues. The automaker encountered difficulties with the operation of the braking system, handling, and the vehicle’s overall dynamics. Because of this, the car was unable to participate in the Super Taikyu Series race at Autopolis last week.

The GR Yaris M concept differs from the standard model by being equipped with a mid-engine — a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit. It was initially created for testing in extreme conditions, but over seven months, developers discovered serious shortcomings. An official statement noted:

We have identified many challenges, particularly in the operation of the brakes, steering, and overall control, which is characteristic of mid-engined cars.

Despite the problems, Toyota plans to continue improving the model and return it to the track in future races. This project is of great importance, as the technologies developed for the GR Yaris M could influence the company’s future production models.

Delays in refining the concept are causing concern, especially among enthusiasts who were expecting the arrival of new sports versions. However, the company’s openness about the technical difficulties demonstrates its commitment to the high quality and safety of its vehicles.
