Smart Company Believes Its E-Class-Sized Sedan Resembles a Shark and Supports This Design

A New Direction for the Brand

The Smart brand, best known for its compact hatchbacks, is continuously expanding its lineup by adding SUVs and coupe-style crossovers. Now it is taking a step into the premium segment with something entirely new. The brand, owned by Geely and Mercedes, has introduced its first fastback, combining an aerodynamic silhouette with styling inspired, according to the manufacturer, by sharks.

After previous mentions in regulatory documents, Smart has published a new series of images of the #6 EHD model. The exterior design was handled by Mercedes-Benz, and the entire concept, according to Smart, borrows features from marine predators.

Nature-Inspired Design

At the front, the hood integrates functional air channels, which Smart has called “Shark Bionic Gills.” At the rear, a four-stage adjustable spoiler is installed, the movement of which, according to the company, is meant to resemble the movement of a shark’s tail.

Among other design details are clearly defined side panel sculpting, aggressive LED headlights united by a central grille, and full-width LED rear lights integrated into a relief panel.

Dimensions and Platform

With a length of 4,906 mm, the #6 model falls into the executive sedan segment, being closer in size to the Mercedes E-Class or BMW 5 Series than to anything Smart has built before. The 2,926 mm wheelbase is the longest in the brand’s history, which should positively impact interior space.

The interior has not been presented yet, but spy photos suggest the presence of a high center console and a large infotainment system display with the latest technologies, similar to the Smart #5 crossover.

Hybrid Powertrain

The Smart #6 is built on the Geely PMA2+ architecture, a further development of the widely used SEA platform, which also underpins models such as the Zeekr 007. The car will debut in a plug-in hybrid version, with fully electric modifications, including a top version from Brabus, appearing later.

The EHD (Extended Hybrid Drive) system uses Geely’s NordThor 2.0 technology. It combines a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine with a front electric motor, delivering a combined 429 hp. The key figure is the range: claimed to be up to 1,810 km in the CLTC cycle, of which up to 285 km can be driven solely on electricity.

The launch of the Smart #6 EHD on the Chinese market is planned for the coming months, followed by a global sales start. Price information will be released later.

The appearance of a car like the Smart #6 clearly demonstrates the brand’s transformation from a manufacturer of city minicars into a serious player in the electrified sedan market. Collaboration with Geely has given Smart access to advanced platforms and technologies, allowing it to create competitive models with a long range. The success of this model in China, the world’s largest electric vehicle market, could be decisive for the further global expansion of the lineup and the change in brand perception by customers worldwide.
