Smart may bring back the iconic Roadster
The Smart company, which is now focused on SUV production, may revive one of its most iconic models – the Roadster. This small sports car was discontinued over 20 years ago, but now there’s a chance for its return in an electric version.
Management opinions
Jason Albatt, head of Smart in the UK, expressed interest in reviving the model:
We once had such a car in the family, and it was incredibly fun.
He also noted that, despite the rainy climate in the UK, the market might be ready for such a car.
Company plans
Currently, Smart is focused on mass-market models such as the #6 electric sedan, which will compete with the Tesla Model 3. However, the idea of a compact electric roadster remains on the table. The manufacturer is studying potential demand and the possibility of creating a car that preserves the spirit of the original.
Some enthusiasts doubt whether the electric version can deliver the same emotions as its gasoline predecessor. As Albatt noted:
Part of the pleasure of an open roof is also the sound of the engine. Perhaps a new audience will look at an electric roadster differently.
The market for electric sports cars is just beginning to take shape, and Smart has a chance to occupy its niche. Examples of other manufacturers such as Alpine and Porsche, who are also working on electric sports models, show that this direction is promising.
