Scout Created an Electric Pickup, But Buyers Prefer Other Models

Scout Brand Revival Shows Unexpectedly High Demand

The Volkswagen Group is investing significant funds into reviving the Scout automotive brand, facing budget overruns. However, this risky bet appears to be starting to pay off, as preliminary demand for the future Terra pickup and Traveler SUV has turned out to be unexpectedly high.

A company representative confirmed that over 150,000 pre-orders have already been received for both models. It is important to note that these orders are fully refundable, so there is always a difference between preliminary interest and the final purchase. However, for vehicles that so far exist only as concepts, this is a significant demonstration of buyer intent.

Advantage on the Side of Hybrid Solutions

The decision to launch the Terra and Traveler as extended-range electric vehicles has proven to be very successful. Versions named “Harvester” use a compact four-cylinder generator installed at the rear, paired with a 63 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor. The result is a total range of over 500 miles, which clearly resonates with customers concerned about the limitations of pure electric vehicles.

We felt confident about this decision. But did I think the ratio would be 85 to 15? No. I assumed it might be closer to 60 to 40.

Scout CEO Scott Keogh noted that the brand’s decision to launch extended-range models from day one is now finding support in announcements from other major manufacturers such as Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Jeep, who are also preparing their own models with engine-generators.

We felt good then and, obviously, feel good now. We feel even better now because, let’s be honest, when you’re alone, you feel good, but still a little lonely. Now that others have made similar announcements, it’s like: ‘Yes, people are joining in.’

Production and Investments

All future Scout models will be produced at the plant in Blythewood, South Carolina. Initially, the cost of building this facility was expected to be $2 billion, but according to new data, this figure has increased to $3 billion. Production of the Terra and Traveler is scheduled to begin in 2027.

Such significant demand for models with an engine-generator may signal an important trend in the electric vehicle market, especially for SUVs and pickups. Buyers, particularly in North America where distances are great and fast-charging infrastructure may be underdeveloped in some regions, clearly prioritize maximum range and the absence of “range anxiety.” The success of Scout’s pre-orders, despite the rising costs of building the plant, suggests that the brand has accurately identified the needs of its target audience. The future will show how many of these 150,000 preliminary applications will turn into real sales when production begins in a few years.
