Not everyone loves animals equally, but most people try to help when they see someone in trouble. But what do you do when you want to help but have no idea how? That is exactly what a woman recently faced near a coffee shop. While waiting in the drive-thru line, she heard a kitten crying somewhere nearby. At the time, she had no idea that the adventure would end with the disassembly of the front end of her Honda. But for the woman, it was definitely worth a happy ending.
How the kitten ended up inside the car
The unusual rescue happened at Scooter’s Coffee in Ames, Iowa, during a heat advisory. A woman named Kepler had just placed her order when she suddenly heard pitiful meowing coming from under the car. It quickly became clear: a tiny kitten had somehow gotten stuck behind the radiator grille. The heat, cramped space, and panic only made the animal’s condition worse.
Attempts to reach the kitten
The Ames Animal Shelter was called to the coffee shop, but animal control officer Katie Pike could not reach the kitten under the Honda. So they had to call the towing company Central Iowa Towing and Recovery for help.
“Everyone was determined: ‘We will do everything we can for this animal, we will all work together and see this through,’” Pike told The Washington Post.
Tow truck operators dismantled the front of the car
Cole Denning and Jordan McNight arrived on the scene with equipment and knowledge that ordinary coffee shop visitors usually do not have. After lifting the Honda and assessing the situation more closely, they realized the front of the car would have to be taken apart.
“We both came to the conclusion that the only way to get her out was to take apart the entire front end of the vehicle,” McNight said.
According to a shelter post on Facebook, the kitten was breathing heavily and clearly frightened. The two tow truck operators carefully removed panels around the hood and headlights until they had created enough space to reach the animal.
A happy ending for the kitten
The entire operation took about 15 minutes. Afterward, the Honda was reassembled and the car drove away. The kitten was taken into care and named Fika, after the Swedish word that means a mindful coffee or tea break. It is hard to imagine a more fitting name. A routine coffee stop turned into a real rescue operation, a partial disassembly of a Honda, and an incredibly happy rescue of a tiny kitten. Once Fika is spayed, she will go home with McNight.

This story is yet another reminder that humanity often shows itself in the simplest things. A coffee shop, animal control officers, and tow truck operators — completely different people came together for one small life. It is also a useful reminder: in hot weather, cats often hide under car hoods or between body parts. Before starting the engine, it is worth listening for strange sounds coming from the underside or hood. Sometimes such attentiveness can save a life.
