The market has determined the price of a used BMW M5 with 4 thousand miles

BMW M5 loses value faster than expected

The new BMW M5 is a true monster, but not just in terms of its technical specifications. The car has become larger and heavier than ever, but this does not guarantee it a high residual value. On the contrary, recent auction results show that the model is losing value rapidly.

One owner listed their 2025 M5 with 4,000 miles on Bring A Trailer, but the car did not meet the reserve price. Although the exact amount is not disclosed, it is worth noting that the starting price of the new model, including delivery, was $139,625. Yet, after a year with minimal mileage, the highest bid at auction did not exceed $106,000—a 24% drop.

“Buyers have already made their choice: they don’t want hybrid technology in sports cars!” — a comment from the auction.

This is particularly interesting in light of another deal where a previous-generation M5 CS with minimal mileage was sold for $196,000. It seems the market prefers traditional engines over hybrids, even if the new models are technically superior. Whether the M5 can restore its investment appeal remains a question of time.

By the way, it would be worth seeing how a wagon version, which is in demand in the U.S., would perform at auction. Perhaps it would show better value retention dynamics compared to the sedan.
