SAIC Shows New Model Similar to Porsche, But Now Under the MG Brand

New MG 07 Model Resembles Porsche

Chinese automaker SAIC recently unveiled the electric sedan and station wagon Z7, whose design evoked associations with the Porsche Taycan models. Now the company is preparing to launch a new model under the MG brand — the MG 07, which continues this visual line.

Design Inspired by German Brand

Teasers of the car show a five-door fastback, whose silhouette resembles the 2022 MG7 model, but with cleaner body lines and hidden door handles. The rear of the car, in particular, looks like a mix of the Porsche Panamera and Taycan: pronounced lines flow into full-width LED taillights across the trunk lid.

Designers also borrowed some elements, for example, the air intakes behind the front fenders from the Taycan. On the side, gill-like openings are visible, similar to those on the Avatr 06. On the roof, a LiDAR unit is noticeable, indicating the presence of advanced driver assistance systems.

Technical Features and Platform

The car will be built on the modular SAIC Nebula platform, which supports both fully electric and hybrid powertrains. It is reported that the thin battery pack may use semi-solid-state technology, promising a good driving range.

Despite the Porsche-inspired exterior, the interior is likely to be more localized. The MG 07 will most likely get a large central display with a multimedia system developed jointly with Oppo.

Market Prospects

The MG 07 is expected to debut in China in the near future. Its competitors will include other Porsche-inspired sedans such as the Xiaomi SU7, as well as models like the BYD Seal, Zeekr 007, Luxeed S7, Deepal SL03, Leapmotor C01, and Tesla Model 3. The electric fastback may also appear in other markets, following the export path of the conventional MG7.

The appearance of the MG 07 once again highlights the trend among Chinese manufacturers to create products that visually compete with established premium brands, while offering modern technology and, likely, a more affordable price. This could significantly intensify competition in the mid-size electric sedan market, forcing traditional players to find new ways to stand out.
