The Ferrari company was founded in 1947 and last year celebrated its 70th anniversary. However, the red racing cars with prancing horses existed even earlier, as Enzo Ferrari had long been the head of the Alfa Romeo racing team and designed cars independently.
One of such cars is up for auction at Bonhams in Goodwood, UK. This 1934 Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 is considered Enzo Ferrari’s very first creation.
Alfa Romeo gave Ferrari complete freedom of action and soon officially left racing, becoming a supplier of spare parts for the Scuderia Ferrari team. The Tipo B P3 was created in 1932 by the Ferrari team under the direction of engineer Vittorio Jano. So it can quite rightly be called Ferrari’s first racing car, especially since there are even the brand’s logos on the hood.
The Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 weighs 750 kg and is equipped with a 2.9-liter inline-eight engine with a supercharger, producing 255 hp. The top speed exceeds 230 km/h, which was an excellent result for the early 1930s.
At the time, Alfa Romeo P3 cars in Scuderia Ferrari colors were unbeatable. They claimed nearly fifty racing victories and were driven by legendary drivers like Tazio Nuvolari, Louis Chiron, and Rudolf Caracciola.
Specifically, this car won the Grand Prix at Brooklands and Donington in the UK, driven by the military aviator Richard Shuttleworth. The Alfa Romeo P3 has been restored and is in excellent condition, with plans to sell it for $6-6.6 million, which is the price of two Bugatti Chirons.
