For the Ukrainian car market, the year 2020 was very challenging, but there were also pleasant news. AutoPortal selected the main events in the automotive life of Ukraine for the past year.
Quarantine
We will not be original if we call the spring quarantine in Ukraine the main event. In April, sales of new cars fell by 46.9%, and used cars stopped being registered altogether. Nevertheless, the market recovered quickly, and by the end of the year, the decline was only 3%.
In many countries, this figure is much worse.
Return of Auto Fixation
From June 1st, cameras for automatic photo and video fixation of traffic violations started operating in Ukraine. Initially, they were launched in Kyiv and Kyiv region (a total of 45 units), but by the end of the year, the first cameras appeared in Lviv region. By the end of the year, more than a million violations were recorded automatically, and the state budget was replenished by almost 200 million hryvnia.
Revival of ZAZ
In the fall, the Zaporizhzhia Automobile Plant finally resumed the production of passenger cars.
The stylish coupe-crossover Renault Arkana was the first to enter the conveyor. By the way, TopGir made its detailed video review. Then, the assembly of several Lada models began. By the end of the year, 816 passenger cars were assembled at ZAZ.
New Brand on the Market
For the first time in several years, a new brand appeared on the Ukrainian market – the Chinese Jetour.
The new division of Chery presented a seven-seat crossover X70 with a low price and very rich equipment.
Price Increase for LPG
In 2020, the registration of LPG in Ukraine sharply increased in price. If previously this procedure cost approximately 500-600 hryvnia, now it costs 3000. As a result, the demand for retrofitting cars to gas dropped around 3-4 times.
Road Construction
The pace of road repair and construction last year was unprecedented.
In total, about 4200 km of highways and a hundred artificial structures (bridges and interchanges) were reconstructed. Works are also progressing on long-term construction projects – for example, traffic was partially opened on the bridge in Zaporizhzhia. Plans for 2021 include refurbishing 6800 km of roads.
