In the USA at a Russo and Steele’s auction, a rare 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 convertible is up for sale. It is expected to fetch at least several hundred thousand dollars.
The car is truly impressive and it is arguably the coolest Chevrolet Corvette C3 Stingray, not counting the prototypes. Under its hood is a massive seven-liter V8 with aluminum cylinder heads.
On paper, the engine develops 430 hp, but in reality, the power is closer to 500 hp (it was understated to reduce insurance). With a 4-speed manual transmission, acceleration to 100 km/h takes about 5 seconds, and the top speed reaches 275 km/h. The L88 package also includes a limited-slip differential, sports suspension, and brakes.
Only 216 Corvette L88s were produced, and in 1968, 80 of them, of which only 20 were convertibles.
To reduce weight, the car was stripped of the heater and radio, but it comes with a hard removable roof.
