US Secret Service Orders Durable Special Vehicles from General Motors

New Vehicles for the US Secret Service

The US Secret Service is collaborating with GM Defense on the development of new vehicles that will have better off-road capability and be less conspicuous abroad than current models. Although the project details remain secret, the new vehicles are likely to feature characteristics of military models already produced by the company.

Currently, most of the service’s vehicles are black armored Chevrolet Suburbans. These large SUVs are well-suited for work within the US, but outside the country, they attract too much attention. According to Service Director Sean Curran, the new vehicles will be developed taking into account the terrain and threat level.

Possible Options

Experts suggest that the new vehicles could be based on the Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) from GM Defense, which is built on the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 platform. Another option is the Light Utility Vehicle (LUV) based on the Silverado HD, manufactured for the Canadian Armed Forces.

It is less likely that the service will choose electric models, as they have a limited range and require charging, which complicates their use in remote regions. It is also possible that GM Defense will develop a completely new platform specifically for the needs of the Secret Service.

The US Secret Service is responsible for protecting the President and other high-ranking officials, so its vehicles must combine high mobility, security, and stealth during missions abroad.
