The average cost of a car in the US is $51,500. In China, car prices start from a fifth of that amount

China’s market offers a multitude of affordable electric vehicles

The Beijing Auto Show became the largest in history: over 180 new cars were introduced for the first time, and the total number of vehicles at the exhibition exceeded 1,400. As at any auto show, there were concept cars and design studios, but in addition to them, real vehicles were on display, showing the true intentions of manufacturers.

Most importantly, it is a reminder of how fierce the competition for cars is in China and how much lower prices are there compared to the US.

Prices in the US and China: a huge gap

According to Reuters, Kelley Blue Book shows that the average price of a new car in the US in March was $51,456. Meanwhile, according to industry website DCar, over 200 electric models, including plug-in hybrids, are now available in China for less than $25,000.

Geely EX2: China’s most popular car

One of the most affordable is the Geely EX2 (called “Star Wish” in China), with a starting price of $10,060. In 2025, it became the best-selling car (of any type) in China. It may be tiny, but it doesn’t look spartan at all. Even at such a low price, it has decent features. This fully electric hatchback, rumored to arrive in Australia this year, has a front trunk, storage spaces, and a 14.6-inch touchscreen on the center console running Geely’s operating system. According to China’s electric vehicle test cycle, the most powerful model has a range of 255 miles (410 km).

Wuling Hongguang MiniEV: even cheaper

If that is too expensive, the Wuling Hongguang MiniEV costs even less — $6,560. This microcar is about minimalism and cuteness. For 2026, Wuling lengthened the car to four doors and added larger rear seats. It is still tiny by American standards: two old two-door versions could fit in the bed of a Ford F-150. The base model can reach a speed of 62 mph (100 km/h) and has a range of 127 miles (204 km) on the CLTC cycle. Wuling also offers a slightly larger, highway-capable Bingo Pro, with a starting price just over $8,000 and a range of 250 miles (402 km).

BYD Seagull: technology at an affordable price

Next up is BYD. The Seagull (also known as the Atto 1, Dolphin Mini, or Dolphin Surf) starts at $10,200, solidifying BYD’s position in the small EV market. Again, despite its entry-level positioning, the new 2026 model offers plenty of technology, including an optional lidar for autonomous driving and automatic lane changing, as well as faster charging and a claimed range of 314 miles (505 km).

These examples vividly demonstrate how Chinese manufacturers like Geely, Wuling, and BYD are actively conquering the market by offering electric vehicles with impressive features at a price five times lower than the average cost of a car in the US. This aggressive pricing strategy, backed by growing technological capabilities, not only stimulates domestic demand but also poses a serious challenge to global automakers, forcing them to rethink their strategies and find ways to lower production costs. It is worth noting that even the most expensive of these models remain significantly more affordable than the average car in the US, highlighting the radically different approaches to mobility and market priorities in the world’s two largest economies.
