Good News: Applications for the $325,000 Mustang GTD Are Being Accepted Again. But There’s Bad News Too: Now Everyone Can Do It

Ford is once again giving car enthusiasts a chance to become owners of the unique supercar Mustang GTD. The application process will resume on April 17, the 62nd anniversary of the legendary Mustang. This time, applications will be open for cars scheduled for production in 2027, 2028, and 2029.

How to Get on the Waitlist

Currently, the manufacturer is revealing few details about the process itself. All interested parties are directed to the official website, where they can leave their contact information. Potential buyers who do so will receive a reminder from the special Mustang GTD concierge team shortly before registration opens. The status of applications is expected to be updated in the summer, and those selected will be able to begin individual work on configuring and purchasing their car.

The Technical Heart of the Legend

Despite the secrecy surrounding sales, the car’s technical specifications are well known. The Mustang GTD is equipped with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine producing 815 horsepower. This unit is paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch robotic transmission, allowing the car to reach a top speed of over 325 kilometers per hour.

Such a powerful technical base allowed the Mustang GTD to post a very respectable time on the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, completing a lap in 6 minutes and 52 seconds. However, Ford continues to take pride in this result, despite competitors having already improved upon it.

Competitive Pressure and the Price Question

The former lapped the Green Hell in 6:50.763, while the latter did it in 6:49.275.

This refers to the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and its derivative ZR1X version, which posted better results. This creates certain pressure, considering the significant price difference. The base price of the Corvette ZR1 is $185,000, which is $140,000 cheaper than the previous year’s Mustang GTD, which cost approximately $325,000. The new ZR1X version, despite its higher price of $209,700, still remains over $115,000 more affordable than the Mustang. The price for the new GTD models is expected to potentially increase further.

Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America

An Alternative in the Lineup

For those interested in a powerful but more road-oriented and affordable option, Ford recently introduced the Dark Horse SC model. It also received a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine, but its starting price is $108,485, making it significantly more attractive to a wide range of buyers.

The opening of a new round of applications for the Mustang GTD will undoubtedly spark a new wave of interest. This is a rare case where a manufacturer provides the opportunity to order a car several years in advance, emphasizing its exclusivity and status. However, against the backdrop of competitors’ successes on the track and their significantly more attractive pricing, the decision to purchase a GTD becomes not just a matter of technical specifications, but also an emotional choice in favor of an American legend. The coming weeks should clarify details regarding updated specifications and the final cost, which will be a decisive factor for many.
