Ford Tests the Ranger Super Duty Using a Robot

Ford has introduced a new version of the Ranger Super Duty pickup truck, aimed at markets outside of North America. This model is designed for heavy-duty operation and features increased payload capacity and power.

Deliveries of the Ranger Super Duty will begin in 2026, but the vehicle is already undergoing intensive testing. One of the key stages was testing at the Silver Creek track in Australia, where the pickup was subjected to extreme loads.

Robotic Testing

A special robot was used for testing, which controlled the vehicle via a system operating the pedals and steering wheel. This allowed for prolonged testing without human involvement.

“Silver Creek is our toughest test track. It tests the Ranger Super Duty from wheels to roof, simulating the wear that typically occurs over decades of operation in the harshest conditions,” said Justin Capicciano, Ranger Super Duty program manager.

Technical Features

The new model features a reinforced chassis, increased ground clearance, and a wider track. Among other updates are a larger fuel tank, weight scales on the tailgate, and differential locks. The vehicle is equipped with an upgraded 3.0-liter V6 engine that meets the requirements for heavy-duty operation.

These changes have increased the maximum trailer mass to 4500 kg, which is 1000 kg more than the standard Ranger version. Despite its advantages, the Ranger Super Duty is not planned for delivery to North America—the main markets will be Australia and other selected countries.

The developers focused on creating a vehicle capable of withstanding the harshest conditions. The use of robotic testing accelerated the development process and guaranteed the reliability of every component before the start of serial production. Particular attention was paid to the strength of the engine mounts, suspension, and body elements, which suffer the most during off-road driving.
