What is known about the initiative
The dealership group from Wayne, Michigan, has begun testing autonomous drone delivery of parts across Detroit. The goal is to reduce customer service time. It’s quite an unusual idea, so soon you may see a drone carrying a spare taillight or a new gearshift knob in the sky over the city.
The Jack Demmer Automotive group’s program is financially supported by a $740,000 grant from the Michigan Advanced Air Mobility Activation Fund. Thanks to this, the company will be able to deliver sought-after parts within a 12-mile radius of Jack Demmer Ford dealerships.
First test flight
The first test flight took place on Tuesday. A drone with a small box lifted off from the dealership grounds and landed in the parking lot behind the Quick Lane Tire and Auto Center. Currently, when urgent parts are needed, employees have to run between the two locations or use a truck. Obviously, a truck has to sit in traffic, while a drone doesn’t worry about that problem.
The test flight so far covered only a short distance. However, Demmer hopes the program will expand to other locations, including the Lincoln dealership in Dearborn and a commercial truck center with 27 service bays planned to open next year. During this week’s trial, specialists from drone supplier Blueflite were on hand, but in the future they will be able to manage deliveries remotely.
Technical details and support
Blueflite representative Tyler Bruder told the Detroit Free Press that the drone has a built-in parachute system for emergencies, and its design is specifically engineered to keep the cargo compartment stable.
The Advanced Air Mobility Activation Fund was created in Michigan to accelerate the development of such technologies in the state and stimulate economic growth.
“This groundbreaking program allows us to move critical parts faster than ever, helping reduce repair delays, increase efficiency, and get our customers back on the road sooner,” said Mark Hatfield, parts manager at Jack Demmer Ford.
A look into the future
If the pilot flights prove effective, this scheme could become common not only for Detroit. Drones can significantly shorten delivery times for small parts and reduce dependence on traffic jams. At the same time, further implementation will depend on aviation authority approvals, weather conditions, and companies’ willingness to invest in infrastructure. However, the very fact of grant support from Michigan indicates that the technology is seen as a promising direction for the region’s development.
