Shocking ignition coil bill from Dodge dealer makes owner wonder if he’s driving a Bentley

Expensive spark plug replacement in a Dodge Challenger

A Dodge Challenger owner in San Diego received a bill for $1,534.22 for an ignition coil replacement. The Kearny Mesa Chrysler Dodge Ram dealership did not provide an explanation for such a high service cost. This case is a reminder that basic knowledge about cars can save owners significant money.

NGK Laser Platinum spark plugs, which match the original parts, are not too expensive – they can be found for approximately $230-250. However, the dealership issued a bill that is several times the cost of the parts themselves. Even considering the complexity of the work on the V8 engine, such a price seems unjustified.

Why so expensive?

The process of replacing spark plugs in a Dodge Challenger 392 is not overly complicated. They are located under the ignition coils, which can be accessed after removing the plastic covers. Even though this engine has two spark plugs per cylinder, a labor cost of $1,500 seems absurd.

The dealership has not yet commented on this situation. This case shows how important it is to understand the basic principles of car maintenance – it can save thousands of dollars. For that price, you could not only replace the spark plugs but also perform more serious technical maintenance.
