Slate unveils the cheapest electric pickup that will make you wrap it yourself at home

A new approach to manufacturing: all identical from the factory

American startup Slate Auto, which has drawn considerable skepticism since its launch 14 months ago, is gradually approaching the start of serial production of its long-awaited compact pickup. Ahead of the production version presentation scheduled for June 24, the company has revealed some new details.

Demand for the model has proven quite high: Slate already reports reservations covering the first year of production. However, it is too early to say how many of these reservations will turn into actual orders, as final prices will only be announced on June 24.

As has become known over the past year, Slate uses a non-standard approach to reduce costs and make its electric vehicle more affordable. Each unit will come off the assembly line completely identical, painted in the same gray color. Buyers will be able to order various accessories to make their pickup unique. There will be no factory painting options; instead, customers will be offered a wide selection of films for wrapping the body.

According to Slate CEO Peter Faricy, there will be available “54 basic film options and 45-50 with metallic effects and other designs.”

Self-wrapping and cheap materials

It is important to note that Slate will not apply these films at the factory. Instead, buyers will have to do it themselves or turn to specialists. Another way to save on production is the use of cheap plastic body panels, allowing the company to avoid investing in expensive metal stamping equipment.

Additionally, buyers will have to install any additional accessories themselves. Slate promises that the process will be simple thanks to a special app that provides instructions and informs about the complexity of installation. Those who do not consider themselves skilled enough can use the RepairPal service network for installing parts.

Unknown prices and delivery method

In addition to the price, it also remains unknown how Slate plans to organize vehicle delivery, as the company does not have its own dealerships or showrooms but plans to sell its electric vehicle in all 50 states.

More details about Slate will be announced during the presentation on June 24. Then, interested buyers will be able to secure a pre-order by paying $300.

Such an unusual approach to manufacturing and sales, where the buyer essentially receives a “semi-finished product” and puts in the effort for personalization, allows the startup to significantly reduce the initial cost of the vehicle. The price of the electric pickup is expected to start at approximately $20,000, making it one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market. However, whether this model will be attractive to the mass consumer, who is accustomed to a full service cycle from the manufacturer, remains to be seen. The lack of a dealer network and the need to independently handle wrapping and accessory installation could become a serious barrier for many potential customers, despite the attractive price.
