The authorities of New Haven, Connecticut, are intensifying the fight against drivers who evade paying vehicle taxes. For this purpose, the city has hired a special team of detectives who are engaged in identifying non-payers. So far, over 500 cars have been found whose owners have not registered their vehicles and have not paid taxes.
The search for offenders uses analysis of tax records and field visits. If detectives confirm that the car owner resides in the city but has not registered it, a tax notice is sent to them. According to the city hall, 180 drivers have already admitted their guilt and started paying taxes, which has brought the city over 27 thousand dollars in additional revenue.
Drivers’ Reaction and Further Actions by the Authorities
Some drivers accused of tax evasion are challenging the decision, claiming they are not city residents. However, the city hall emphasizes that the goal is not to collect taxes from non-residents, but to ensure fairness for all citizens. Mayor Justin Elicker stated:
Taxes fund the services that residents demand every day: road repairs, teachers in schools, police on the streets.
The situation shows that hiding from taxes is becoming increasingly difficult. The city is actively identifying non-payers and insists that everyone must fulfill their duties to the community.
