An unusual 1979 VAZ-2121 SUV is up for auction at RM Sotheby’s in London. The Niva can be purchased for a minimum of 50 thousand pounds sterling ($65 thousand), which is the price of a new Porsche Boxster.
Of course, the Niva is more respected in Europe than any other VAZ model, but in this case, the reason for such a high price is different. This car participated in the 1979 Paris-Dakar rally, so even in not the best condition, it is worth a lot.
As you know, in the 70-80s, Nivas regularly participated in various rallies and especially in the Paris-Dakar marathon. They were prepared by the French Lada dealer Jean-Jacques Poch. This particular car did not reach the finish line, although another Niva even managed to finish third in its class.
The rally car’s engine power is increased to 80 hp, with underbody protection and a larger fuel tank installed. To reduce weight, the bumpers were removed, and the hood and doors were made of plastic.
For a long time, the VAZ-2121 was kept by racer François Ginsson, who participated with it in the Paris-Dakar rally. In 2009, the Frenchman sold the Niva to a new owner, who decided to put it up for auction.
