In Britain, a very unconventional tuning of the second-generation Mazda MX-5 was proposed. The roadster was transformed into the legendary Alfa Romeo Tipo 158 racing car.
Alfa Romeo Tipo 158 was once the scourge of racing tracks from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. In the very first 1950 Formula-1 season, it won six out of seven Grand Prix.
The project was named Tipo 184. The designation 158 referred to a 1.5-liter eight-cylinder engine, while the Mazda MX-5 NB has a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine.
Of course, the replica is not as powerful as the original – 140 hp versus 200-350 (the supercharged Alfa Romeo 158 had several power versions). However, from the outside, it is almost indistinguishable from the real racing car.
Even the disc brakes are covered with “drum” covers.
Tipo 184 will be released as a kit car, meaning the racing car will have to be assembled in one’s own garage. However, the manufacturer promises to help the first ten buyers with this. The Formula-1 car can be purchased for just 7500 pounds sterling ($10,100).
