In the United Kingdom, the SilverstoneAuctions took place, where quite a few interesting supercars went under the hammer. But its main star and the most expensive car unexpectedly became an old 1965 Ford Cortina. 
The compact Ford coupe went under the hammer for as much as $270,000, becoming more expensive than the Ferrari Testarossa and Mercedes SLR McLaren. Yes, this is a charged version of the Lotus Ford Cortina, but even that doesn’t justify such a high price for a modest 1.6-liter car. 
It turns out that this particular car is a racing legend.
In 1965, Sir John Whitmore won 8 out of 9 races in the European Touring Car Championship with it. 
The champion owned his car for a long time, and then the Lotus Cortina changed hands several times. Recently it was restored.
