Announcement of the New Sporty Electric Car
The Vauxhall brand, the British division of Opel within the Stellantis group, has officially confirmed the development of a new sporty version of the compact Corsa hatchback. This model will receive the GSE designation and will become the fully electric successor to the long-discontinued Vauxhall Corsa VXR and Opel Corsa OPC models.
Details from the Test Shot
The manufacturer has published only one test shot of the future hot version, which shows the front wheel. The car is covered in camouflage film with the inscription Corsa GSE and graphics in black, yellow, and white tones. The 18-inch alloy wheels have a unique three-spoke design, and yellow brake calipers are visible behind them.
The metal body panels look similar to the current generation Corsa, introduced in 2019 and updated in 2023. However, the GSE version has received additional wheel arch extensions, making it similar to the new Peugeot E-208 GTI.
Expected Design and Technical Features
The model is also expected to receive updated bumpers and sporty details inspired by the Opel Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo concept car. The question of whether it will feature a more aerodynamic radiator grille with new LED headlights remains open.
Shared Technical Platform
While the company keeps the technical specifications secret, it can be confidently assumed that the Corsa GSE will use the same platform as the compact Mokka GSE crossover. This platform also underpins the sporty electric cars of other Stellantis brands, such as the Abarth 600e, Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce, Peugeot E-208 GTI, and Lancia Ypsilon HF.
All the listed models are equipped with a front electric motor producing 278 horsepower (207 kW) and 345 Nm of torque. This is complemented by a Torsen limited-slip differential, more powerful brakes, and stiffer suspension tuning. Energy will most likely be stored in a standard 54 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing a range of approximately 322-370 kilometers.
Positioning and Executive Comment
Eurig Druce, Managing Director of Vauxhall and the Stellantis Group in the UK, stated:
“The Corsa GSE will combine the practicality of a small and agile car with exciting, motorsport-inspired, pure electric power and dynamics. Vauxhall has a rich heritage of creating hot hatchbacks, and we are delighted to now offer customers the same thrills, but combined with electrifying performance and zero emissions during the operation of these new GSE models.”
Market Launch and Competitors
The Opel and Vauxhall Corsa GSE will hit the European and UK markets later this year, becoming the new flagship in the Corsa lineup, above the GS Line version. In addition to sibling models like the Peugeot E-208 GTI and Lancia Ypsilon HF, competitors for the future newcomer may include the anticipated Volkswagen ID.Polo GTI and the rumored Hyundai Ioniq 3 N.
The arrival of the Corsa GSE clearly indicates Stellantis’s strategy of electrifying even its most emotional and dynamic models. This is not just a replacement of an internal combustion engine with an electric unit, but a comprehensive approach that includes improved dynamics thanks to the differential, an updated chassis, and aggressive design. Thus, the concern is trying to preserve the spirit of classic hot hatchbacks in the new era, while simultaneously creating a powerful product to compete for buyers’ attention in the segment of compact electric sports cars, which is beginning to fill up actively.
