Stellantis’ Strategy in the Chinese Market
In the global automotive market, which is increasingly focused on electrification, Stellantis has decided that if it cannot beat China’s rapid progress, it’s better to join it. By acquiring a significant stake in Leapmotor, the company has demonstrated its readiness to adapt, viewing collaboration as the fastest way to remain competitive in creating affordable electric offerings.
Strengthening Partnership with Dongfeng
Stellantis also aims to strengthen relations with Dongfeng Motor Group, which could soon lead to the introduction of a new model under one of its own brands. These companies already have a long shared history: Dongfeng manufactures certain Citroen and Peugeot models for Stellantis. However, the focus is now on the Dongfeng Voyah and M-Hero brands.
New Jeep Offering
According to a report by the Chinese publication Economic Observer, Stellantis plans to develop a new Jeep model within the next 18 months. It will have its own design but will rely on Dongfeng for the powertrain, interior systems, and autonomous driving technology. This scheme is already familiar from recent examples, including collaborations by Japanese automakers such as Mazda with Changan, which resulted in the EZ-6 and EZ-60 models, as well as Toyota, Nissan, and Honda, which have also engaged in similar joint efforts.
Stellantis and Dongfeng declined to comment on this information, but Economic Observer claims that the vehicle will be a serious off-roader with a possible debut in the first quarter of 2027. It is unknown whether the model will remain exclusive to China, but this market will undoubtedly be its main focus.
Technological Capabilities
It is not yet known which specific Dongfeng powertrain Jeep will choose for this new model. One option is the hybrid system with a 1.5-liter engine from the M-Hero M817, which uses two electric motors and delivers at least 912 hp and 1280 Nm of torque, surpassing all other Jeep models. The M-Hero 917 goes even further, offering an impressive 1072 hp, bringing it close to hypercar levels. The question remains whether Stellantis will choose this version or limit the performance.
Production Prospects
If the plan is implemented, production will likely take place in China. Stellantis has experience working in this country, having previously manufactured Jeep models in partnership with GAC before that venture ceased operations in 2022.
This initiative could become a key step for Stellantis in strengthening its position in the Chinese market, where local technology and production are becoming increasingly crucial. Collaboration with Dongfeng will allow for faster adaptation to local requirements, particularly regarding electrification, which could positively impact the global competitiveness of the Jeep brand.
