Now the 112-year-old Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost is officially the most expensive car in the world. Previously, this title belonged to the Ferrari 250 GTO, which was sold for $70 million.

The Rolls-Royce 40/50HP with the twelfth chassis number was built for Rolls-Royce managing director Claude Johnson. He ordered a silver-bodied cabriolet from the Barker&Co studio. Interestingly, some details are coated with a layer of natural silver.

The car has an interesting history: at one time Rolls-Royce participated in the endurance run Scottish Reliability Trial and covered 24,000 km without breakdowns.

For its characteristic color and very quiet engine, the car was nicknamed Silver Ghost and this name became official.

Shortly after, Johnson sold the car and it changed owners several times until in 1948 it was bought back by Rolls-Royce. Silver Ghost became a show car and participated in shows worldwide.

Until recently, it was owned by the Volkswagen Group. It turns out, this Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost was part of the asset division between VW and BMW (the brand Rolls-Royce then went to the Bavarians, and Bentley to Volkswagen). Now the Germans have earned well by selling the rarity.
