New Special Version of Subaru Impreza in Australia
Subaru has introduced a new special version of the Impreza with STI enhancements for the Australian market. This model has received a number of aesthetic updates that give it a sporty appearance, although the technical specifications remain unchanged.
Impreza’s Legacy and Modernity
Despite a rich rally heritage, the sixth generation Subaru Impreza did not receive a full-fledged sports version. However, Subaru Australia has released a special version that enhances the hatchback’s design using STI accessories.
The Impreza S-Edition looks similar to the STI Performance Parts prototype shown at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2023.
Design Changes with STI Elements
The updated wheels are combined with a number of aerodynamic elements, including a front splitter, rear spoiler, and roof spoiler, all finished in glossy black. A new sporty radiator grille with a unique mesh pattern further distinguishes the S-Edition. Buyers can choose from one of three body colors: Pure Red, Crystal Black Silica, or Crystal White Pearl.
Subaru has also added an engine start button with the STI logo and a corresponding gear shift knob to make the Impreza’s interior a bit more interesting. It is worth noting that all the mentioned updates were already available as options in the Australian configurator, but for the first time they have been combined into a special edition.
Technical Specifications Remain Unchanged
Despite Subaru’s claims that the Impreza S-Edition “conveys a racing spirit from the grille to the rear,” there are no mechanical updates under the hood. The car is mechanically identical to the Impreza AWD 2.0S, equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter boxer engine producing 154 hp (115 kW / 156 PS). Unlike buyers in the US, Australians do not get the option of a more powerful 2.5-liter boxer engine.
Power is transmitted through a Lineartronic CVT to Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD all-wheel-drive system. The suspension and brakes remain unchanged, although owners can order a flexible strut bar for additional rigidity.
Limited Series and Pricing Policy
Subaru will release only 100 units of the Impreza S-Edition in Australia. The cost of the special version is AU$42,490 (US$27,700) excluding on-road costs, making it AU$3,500 (US$2,300) more expensive than the Impreza AWD 2.0S, despite adding equipment worth approximately AU$6,500 (US$4,200).
In addition to the Impreza, the company also introduced a special version of its crossover sibling. The Crosstrek Onyx is equipped with 18-inch dark metallic alloy wheels and a black rear spoiler. This model costs AU$43,890 (US$28,500), which is AU$1,500 (US$975) more expensive than the standard Crosstrek AWD 2.0S trim on which it is based.
These special editions demonstrate how Subaru uses aesthetic improvements to enhance the appeal of its models in a competitive market without making changes to the technical part. Such steps are often aimed at attracting brand fans who appreciate unique design and limited series, even if they are not accompanied by increased performance.
