Announcement of the Exhibition and Main Concepts
Subaru is actively preparing for this year’s Japan Mobility Show, having officially announced its exhibits. The highlights will be two concepts bearing the STI badge – one with a fully electric powertrain, and the other a five-door hatchback.
The automaker has divided its lineup into two stages – Performance and Adventure – under the main theme of “Subaru’s Difference in Control”.
Starting with the STI world debuts, the two concepts are named Performance-E and Performance-B. The first is a battery electric vehicle that “paves the way for a new generation of Subaru”, suggesting its potential transition into a production model.
Details of the Electric Performance-E Concept
According to the official release, the Performance-E “combines exciting aesthetic proportions with outstanding aerodynamics and practicality”. Teasers show sharp body lines, aggressive LED headlights, and large air intake vents in the bumper, while the silhouette hints at a hatchback/fastback body type.
Furthermore, the electric concept promises a “driver-oriented layout and a comfortable, spacious interior”, integrating “a variety of innovative technologies” for an “intuitive and exciting driving experience”.
Information about the Performance-B Hatchback
The STI Performance-B concept is a hot hatchback with an internal combustion engine, which is stated to expand the range of options for customers. The model was first shown in June, but now we are getting more information about it.
The headlights and hood with ventilation holes look identical to the current-generation WRX sedan, but the redesigned body kit includes wide fender flares and a different grille. More importantly, it features a five-door hatchback body with a large spoiler on the tailgate. Under the hood is a boxer engine, paired with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system.
Although it is unknown whether Subaru will put this hatchback into series production, such a model could revive the traditions of the third-generation 2008 WRX STI and become a worthy competitor for the Toyota GR Corolla.
Models in the Adventure Scenario
Moving to the Adventure stage, it includes prototypes of the fully electric Trailseeker crossover (E-Outback), the new Forester Wilderness, and the new Outback Wilderness.
All three models are being presented in Japan for the first time and are equipped with additional accessories. Specifically, the Trailseeker has a roof cargo box, the Forester carries two large canoes, and the Outback is equipped with roof rails and a bicycle.
Finally, the company will also present the Family Huckster – a special version of the 1983 Subaru GL Wagon with significant performance and aerodynamic upgrades.
The automaker will hold a press conference at the Japan Mobility Show on October 29, with a speech by company President Atsushi Osaki.
This motor show becomes an important milestone for Subaru, as it demonstrates their strategic approach to combining traditional technologies, such as boxer engines and all-wheel drive, with future electric solutions. Such concepts may signal the brand’s intention to preserve its sporting heritage while adapting it to new market demands and environmental standards, which is particularly relevant in the context of the global transition to electric vehicles.
