The Unique Subaru S201 STI Reminds Us of the Brand’s Crazy Past
Subaru has not always been a brand focused exclusively on practical cars. Long before the brand bet on crossovers and an off-road image, it created real gems for enthusiasts. Clear proof of this is one of only 300 examples of the Impreza S201 STI, which is up for auction. This car is a vivid reminder that Subaru once occupied a completely different market niche than it does today.
At first glance, the S201 might seem like a tuner’s prank. The massive front bumper, aggressive rear diffuser, and giant three-tier rear wing look so extreme that a modern viewer might perceive it as the result of homemade tuning. However, all this aggression is factory-standard. This is exactly how Subaru Tecnica International (STI) built this model.
This is how Subaru built it. None of the elements are aftermarket.
The Technical Legacy of a Legendary Generation
The S201 marked the finale of the GC8 Impreza era, and STI engineers gave it their all. Under the hood, they installed a turbocharged 2.0-liter EJ20 boxer engine, producing about 300 horsepower, which at the time boldly crossed the unofficial Japanese limit of 280 hp. The car received a front limited-slip differential, a rear limited-slip differential, upgraded suspension, forged RAYS wheels, and one of the most impressive factory body kits in the brand’s history.
A Symbol of the Brand’s Changed Philosophy
The auction example has approximately 160,000 kilometers on the odometer, already has American documentation, and, despite some past modifications and repainting, remains an embodiment of the STI spirit that no longer exists today. In those days, Subaru was not trying to be “premium” or “mature.” The brand wasn’t concerned with pleasing everyone.
It built cars for rally fans, street racers, and those seeking raw, mechanical, and slightly unbridled emotions behind the wheel. The current WRX and other models have undoubtedly become much more civilized, comfortable, and technological, meeting modern market demands. However, the S201 reminds us of that uncompromising dedication to the driving experience that made Subaru iconic among a certain circle of car enthusiasts. The sale of such rare cars is always more than just a transaction; it’s a symbolic passing of the torch and an opportunity to touch the living history of automotive engineering when engineers had more freedom to experiment.
